09/11/12 Class Notes
By David Sunfellow

This week’s class began with a few minutes of silence, part of which was spent sending out prayers for all those affected by 911. Then I shared the most important NDE-related news and events I am aware of that have taken place since last we met…

First Dream Class Begins Tuesday, September 18, 2012

One of the fundamental truths presented in “The Formula for Creating Heaven on Earth” is that we must all develop the ability to receive guidance directly from God/Spirit/our Higher Selves. Another critical component of The Formula is understanding that whatever inner guidance we receive is inescapably distorted by our conditioning, woundings, level of development, biology, and many other forces. Along with a sincere desire to know the truth and a constant turning towards the Divine for help, one of the most effective ways we have to discern the path that is best for us is to join with other seekers, who often see what we do not. Which leads to another fundamental truth presented by The Formula: life has been designed to promote and, indeed, insist on relationship. In order to be truly healthy, happy, and whole, we must join with others. Only then do hidden dimensions of our psyche reveal themselves; only then do whole pictures emerge; only then does the guidance we receive from on High become truly whole, balanced, and effective.

Our Dream Group is designed to help all of us learn how to form direct, personal relationships with the Divine through using dreams, and to learn how to do dream work with each other in a way that is truly transformative. Our dream group will eventually incorporate other ways of receiving guidance and emphasize the idea that God/Spirit is communicating with us all the time in many different ways. We will also be using group prayer and The VisionQuest Game to tap the healing power of relationships.

Our Dream Group will take place the first and third Tuesday of every month, in between our bi-monthly NDE classes. The first class begins Tuesday, September 18th, at St. Andrew’s from 7:00 Pm – 8:30 PM.

2012 IANDS Conference

The International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS) held their annual conference in Scottsdale from August 30 to September 2, 2012. Speakers at this year’s event included such notables as Dr. Eben Alexander, Mellen-Thomas Benedict, David Bennett, Dannion Brinkley, Ellen Dye, and Jan Holden.

Here’s a news report that ABC 15 ran about the conference:

Here’s what the IANDS website had to say about this conference:

“The 2012 IANDS Conference recently ended and it was an exceptional experience for everyone. We would like to thank all our presenters, workshop leaders and all our attendees for making the conference such a profound experience! Special thanks go to our volunteers and healers, and to our tireless conference organizers! Our keynote and plenary speakers especially — Tony Cicoria, Eben Alexander, Dannion Brinkley, Frederic Delarue, Nancy Clark, David Bennett — and all the other speakers filled our minds with wonderful insights and our hearts with profound hope for the future. Thank you!!

I’ve also heard from a couple folks who attended the conference as presenters:

NDEr Ellyn Dye reports:

“The IANDS conference was great, and I’ll be posting the video on my website soon for anyone who wants to see my presentation. I was so pleased, I thought it went well and I got some great feedback on it. Of course, meeting the people is always the high point.”

NDEr Deirdre Dewitt Maltby reports:

“It was such a wonderful experience to attend the IANDS conference in Scottsdale Arizona few weeks ago. So much energy and love! It was like a three day ‘Woodstock’ Spiritual Love-Fest. And of course the lush grounds of the Double Tree Paradise Hotel made the weekend complete perfection!! All the speakers had such strong and inspiring messages for everyone. Tony Cicoria and Frederic Delarue both gave us music that was beyond awesome. The sharing between people was of course the focal point of it all and so many hearts came together in that sharing. To all of you who attended I am sure you know what I mean. To those of you who did not, you may want to put it on your calendar for next year — a really worth while event to attend.”

Psychotherapist Graham Maxey reports:

“We only got to be there for Friday sessions. Shannon and I had to get home to see a family that could only meet with us over the Labor Day weekend. Anyway, I met several people there ‘by accident’ that were really wonderful people to connect with. I enjoyed hearing Dr. Alexander’s presentation, and I enjoyed having lunch with Melon-Thomas Benedict. I was dismayed that my presentation, along with 3 other presenters was lumped together so we each only had 15 minutes. I think that made what we had to share rather unintelligible. Heard about Pre Birth Experiences (PBEs), which didn’t really surprise me, but was wonderful to hear about. It’s really nice, like at my local IANDS group, to just get information, and not have to hear people ‘cluck, cluck’ about how ‘this is controversial, and there are other explanations.’ That gets so tedious at times. Most of the alternative explanations turn out to be no explanations at all. It’s nice to get to spend time with people who are more interested in ‘What does this mean?’ than ‘Is that real?’ ”

NDE Training Video for Professional Caregivers

IANDS is partnering with Blue Marble Films to produce a training video for medical professionals on caring for patients who have had a near-death experience. The video will provide medical professionals with a protocol for caring for patients who have had an NDE, and will give a model for a positive interaction between patients and caregivers. The total cost for producing this important video is expected to be $20,000. So far $11,000 has been raised; an additional $9,000 needed to make this video a reality. Becki Hawkins Comes To Sedona

Becki Hawkins, a hospice nurse and a chaplain, is the author of “Transitions: A Nurse’s Education About Life And Death”. She sat by the bedside of seriously ill and terminally ill patients for more than 30 years as an oncology and hospice nurse. During that time, she listened to patients describe various kinds of spiritual experiences, including near-death experiences. Becki will be sharing these stories, including the lessons she learned from them, during our Tuesday, October 9, 2012 class. This class, like all of our NDE classes, will take place between 7:00 and 8:30 PM at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Sedona (see below for directions). To introduce Becki to the class, I played an excerpt from an interview she did with RSU Public TV. The portion I played runs from 06:30 to 07:52.

A Helpful Summary of Lilou Mace’s Second Interview with Anita Moorjani

Our classes began by exploring the amazing near-death experience of Anita Moorjani. Lilou Mace interviewed Anita before her book, “Dying To Be Me”, was published and now, a year later, interviews her again. These are two of the best interviews I’ve seen with Anita. In the first interview, she tells her story; in the second, she discusses some of the things that have transpired since then. To encourage the members of our local class to watch these inspiring interviews, I played two clips from the most recent video in our last class. Since then, Marianne Irvine, who runs a website called “Miracle Mama”, has highlighted the main aspects of Anita’s second interview on this helpful page. To learn more about Anita, go here. The notes I created to study Antia’s NDE and book are located here.

NDE Stories and Prominent NDErs Quick List

Is there a quick way to keep up with all interesting near-death experiences and experiencers that we explore in our classes? Yes there is! Among many helpful resources, NHNE sponsors the NDE Stories website, which is collecting “the most inspiring, informative, and deeply compelling near-death experiences (and related phenomena) ever recorded” and this helpful quick list of prominent NDErs.

Clint Walker’s NDE (and Celebrity NDEs in General)

Finally, we all know that many celebrities report having near-death experiences. In the video below, I shared two clips with the class — 00:39 – 01:12 and 03:35 – 08:04. The first clip describes how famous Clint Walker was during his hey day (for those who may not know), while the second features Clint describing a near-death experience that changed his life. Reports Clint: “I realized that a lot of the things I felt were important, really weren’t. Being a big star wasn’t that important. What was important was taking the time to enjoy a sunset and sunrise; to spend time with good friends…”

The Life Review Discussion

After I finished sharing the above news, I spent a few minutes summarizing The Life Review part of “The Light & The Light Review” (pdf). Then we focused on “5. We Are All Born With A Special Purpose”. To prime the pump, we read the following excerpts:

“Whitton has uncovered evidence that thoughtless acts are not the only things that cause individuals remorse during the life review. Under hypnosis his subjects reported that failed dreams and aspirations — things they had hoped to accomplish during their life but had not — also caused them pangs of sadness.”

— Author Michael Talbot, from “The Holographic Universe”

“I was… sitting in a beautiful, sun-drenched field with an angel. The brilliance and intensity of the surrounding beauty and the purity of the angel’s love were simultaneously overwhelming and rejuvenating. We spoke for what seemed like many hours, and I never wanted to leave. We talked about the specifics of my accident and I was given more information regarding many of the reasons I was returned to Earth… including the protection of my husband’s health, being a rock of support for my family and community after the death of my son, helping others find their way back to God, and sharing my story and experiences.”

— NDEr Dr. Mary Neal, from “To Heaven and Back”

“He looked down at me and he said, ‘you’re not supposed to be here. It’s not time for you to be here.’

“And I remember looking up at him and saying, ‘but I want to be here’… With all my heart, I wanted to be there. I wanted to go home. I was happy.

“And he took a pause and… you could see him thinking about something and deciding whether to say something. And with that… there was a picture placed in my head of a memory of my original agreement of why I had come to Earth to begin with. It was like I remembered and I went, ‘Oh, right. Right…’

“One of the things that bothers me so tremendously about the metaphysical movement, in lieu of my experience and in lieu of what I was shown… if there is any message I can give, it’s not about meditating and leaving your body and taking your Light Being out of this Earth. Indeed, not. It is about bringing the Light into this Earth. Stay here. Be an anchor. Let the Light come in through you into this world. Don’t abandon this world. We need you. We need you here. We need you to be present. And we need you to be open, with an open heart… Everybody must be open. To bring this new age in, it is about opening your heart and letting it sing through you. It is coming! And it is a matter of all of us. Just open your heart and let It come in. Don’t leave. Don’t meditate and think this place is a bad place and we’re going to get out of here. This is a wonderful place. And it’s going to get even more wonderful. You’re here to anchor the Light so It can come into this dimension and be here.”

— NDEr Anne Horn

The comments above come from the following video (which, due to time constraints, wasn’t played during this particular class):

Finally, we listened to Ellyn Dye talk about NDErs coming back to Earth with a mission. The portion I played for the class runs began at 07:15 and runs to the end. A text version of her comments is included in The Life Review part of “The Light & The Light Review” (pdf) and follows her video.

“We all know that we came back with a mission. Most of us don’t know what it was at the time, but we know we had one. You spend a lot of time trying to figure out what that was. At different times since then, I’ve come up with ideas as to what my mission was, but now, I think, my mission and everybody’s mission is to be here, in three dimensions, in this time, in this space, and to hold the energy of the Light of God. Just hold it. We don’t have to do anything. Just hold that energy. And if we hold it, we help other people around us find that energy and feel that energy. Humanity is changing. Humanity is evolving and this is the time. And all you have to remember is there is nothing out there to fear. You are a divine, powerful being. We all are. We’re all part of God. We’re all part of love. That’s who we are. We are the heart of God. And we’re here to bring that to planet Earth. To create Heaven on Earth. And we can do it. In love. That’s why we are here.”

— NDEr Ellyn Dye

The discussion part of the class began with me highlighting what is clear from the videos and quotes that were shared, namely that we all come to Earth with special missions; that is important for us to be in this world, fulfilling our functions, rather than trying to get out; that the over-lighting purpose of all of our missions is to love others and help bring Heaven to Earth; that some of us are given clear and specific purposes, while others, not so much; and that many people, perhaps most, struggle to figure out what, exactly, their particular function in life is. It was noted that missions sometimes change as we do; that we may be called to be a parent, for example, and then be called to do something else once our children have been raised. Some missions may also boil down to simply doing what we feel called to do every day, without any particular long-term goal or agenda. We were also reminded that NDErs, like everyone else, don’t always express themselves perfectly — or have perfect understandings. In Anne Horn’s comments, for example, she focused on meditation being an escape from this world. While some people use mediation for this purpose, meditation can also be used as a means to connect more fully with the divine so the divine can more fully enter this world.

After talking about things generally, space was provided for those in the group who felt inclined to share their personal experiences. What kind of missions did feel they had? What kind of struggles had they faced? What kind of lessons had they learned? Since this part of the meeting was very personal, I won’t share it here. I will say that it was very inspiring — and educational!

The meeting ended with a few minutes of silence.

Future Classes

Our next NDE class will take place Tuesday, September 25th, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at 604 Desert Sage Lane (we are changing locations for this one meeting because St. Andrew’s won’t be available). The first part of this class will provide space for people to talk about their missions who weren’t able or ready to during this week’s class. The second part of the class will focus on the sixth and final section of the Life Review process, “Life Reviews From God’s Perspective”.

In the meantime, our first dream class will begin Tuesday, September 18, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at St. Andrew’s. Click here for more information.

A Newly Emerging Spiritual Path

Unlike spiritual paths that arose from the ideas and inner experiences of lone, isolated human beings, the path presented by near-death experiences is emerging as a direct, grassroots revelation that millions of people from all over the world are receiving and sharing. If we explore this newly emerging path deeply enough, we discover that all religions, philosophies, and cultures are honored; that science and spirituality are celebrated; that both the human and spiritual side of our natures are cherished and embraced. In short, near-death experiences present us with a universal, all-inclusive, perfectly integrated spiritual path that revolves around three core truths: 1. We are all one; 2. Love is the essence of life; 3. We are here, in this world, to become perfect embodiments of the divine.
