04/23/13 Class Notes
By David Sunfellow

As always, the class began with a few moments of silence. Then we continued our efforts to come to a deeper understanding of how we fool ourselves, and how we can be led astray by dishonest and/or deluded spiritual teachers, beliefs, and practices. This is part of our ongoing efforts to learn how to embody one of the most transformative aspects of NDEs, namely: seeing, speaking, and living lives that are based on universal truths versus man-made lies, guesses, philosophies, and misconceptions.

I began this class my playing a video from Jimmy Kimmel Live that humorously illustrates how human beings can lie with astonishing abandon. While you watch this video, try to remember times in your life when you acted like you knew more about something than you actually did. Are there times and places in your life where you don’t speak the truth now? What can you do to see, speak, and live more honestly? How can you help others do the same?

After watching this video, I shared an email that I received from one of the members of our class. It was sparked by the movie we watched last week called, Kumare’:

Quoted by permission, here is what this class member wrote:

“Hi David…. It’s really somewhat of a mystery to me as to why you’re showing these videos of people who are pretending to be gurus and healers. Is it because we live in Sedona where this stuff is prevalent?? The video last week was not even worth watching, and this week’s sounds like the same crap. Don’t you realize that grown up mature adults who are living in reality would already immediately have a sense about these freaks right away? I certainly do without even needing to think about it. So why bother focusing on the small percentage of weirdoes out there and how they can draw in people who will believe anyone and anything like so many people in Sedona. Where I come from, me and all my friends pretty much lived in Reality, not illusion and fantasy like so many local yokels…”

Here’s my response:

“Thanks for the honest feedback. The reason we are watching these videos is to demonstrate, as graphically as possible, how susceptible WE ALL ARE to lies and deception. While we see clearly in some areas, we are just as deluded as the fake gurus and preachers we are studying in others. The greatest danger of all is to somehow think that WE are different, special, and do not lie to ourselves or others AT ALL. Even a superficial examination of our lives, relationships, and careers will reveal ways that we are deceptive with others, and ourselves, all the time. That’s why we are watching these videos. To help all of us become more conscious of the universal human tendency to deceive ourselves, and others.”

After talking with the class a few minutes about this, I raised and answered this question:

How Can We Tell If We Are Seeing, Speaking, and Living The Truth?

My answer:

“Are we seeing things as God does? Are we actively loving everyone and everything unconditionally? Are we filled with peace, joy, love, bliss? Are we full of life, enthusiasm, compassion, creativity, boundless energy?

“To the degree we are, we are living in The Truth; to the degree we aren’t, we are bound by various kinds of delusions.”

Taking this a step further, two things seem to be necessary to begin moving from lives built on misconceptions to lives built on truth:

1. We have to have know what The Truth actually is.

2. We have to begin to identify and remove all the blocks that prevent us from seeing, speaking, and living the truth 24/7, in every aspect of our lives and relationships.

To a large degree, this appears to be a developmental issue. In other words, before we have enough awareness to actually search for deeper truths, and then begin to identify and re-educate the parts of us that are full of various misconceptions, we need to develop the necessary tools and abilities to do this. We do this in the same way that children evolve from believing, fervently, in Santa Claus and Tooth Fairies, to pondering the mysteries of the universe through rational thought, science, mathematics, psychology, physics, quantum physics, etc. And these,  in turn, lead to even deeper, more mature world views.

But before we can entertain deeper, more mature world views, we have to take a close look at Santa Claus and Tooth Fairies.

Which brings us back to the main event of this week’s meeting: Darren Brown’s documentary “Miracles for Sale.”

While last week’s documentary took a look at the dark side of Eastern spirituality, Darren Brown’s documentary focuses on the West, via Evangelical Christians. Significantly, both of these documentaries were made by people who set out to debunk the traditions they examined. Neither filmmaker believed in supernatural forces either. So while these documentaries did a good job exposing some of the harmful deceptions associated with East and West spiritual beliefs and practices, they did so at the expense of honoring what is actually true. We know from our near-death experience studies, for example, that miraculous healings are not only real, but that they happen all the time. We also know that many of the core truths promoted by both Eastern and Western religious traditions are based in facts. And that these “facts” are just as visible as the “lies” that these two documentaries expose IF we have the necessary interest (and development) to pursue such topics with an open mind and heart.

With that as an introduction, here are two videos. The first is a movie trailer for Brown’s documentary; the second is the documentary itself. As you watch, try to identify the parts of dishonest and undeveloped parts of yourself that are fooled by charlatans as well as the parts of yourself that act like charlatans…

Future Classes

Our next NDE class will take place on Tuesday, May 7th from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM at St. Andrew’s (see below for directions). Among other things, David will be discussing “The Formula” and the new “Circling Worksheet”.

A Newly Emerging Spiritual Path

“Unlike spiritual paths that arose from the ideas and inner experiences of lone, isolated human beings, the path presented by near-death experiences is emerging as a direct, grassroots revelation that millions of people from all over the world are receiving and sharing. If we explore this newly emerging path deeply enough, we discover that all religions, philosophies, and cultures are honored; that science and spirituality are celebrated; that both the human and spiritual side of our natures are cherished and embraced. In short, near-death experiences present us with a universal, all-inclusive, perfectly integrated spiritual path that revolves around three core truths: 1. We are all one; 2. Love is the essence of life; 3. We are here, in this world, to become perfect embodiments of the divine.”

“The Formula”

“The Formula for Creating Heaven on Earth” or “The Formula” was introduced in David Sunfellow’s two-part YouTube presentation called “How Near-Death Experiences Are Changing The World.” The goal has been to identify the universal truths presented by near-death experiences and wrestle them into “a formula” that we can use to transform our lives.
